Character Design: Knuckles' design started off with market research inspired by American children's taste toward a number of different animals. The designs were narrowed down to eight candidates. The most popular and final design was Knuckles' sporting his signature dreadlocks. The design was most popular with middle and high schoolers for his "bad boy" image. A few colors were discussed for Knuckles, green being one of them due Knuckles becoming reptilian. The long tail from the earlier reptilian design would in fact stay though. The staff looked toward red and green being candidates while Yuji Naka wanted purple. But the market research would show red was the most desirable color among the American kids. Originally Knuckles would have a whirlwind ability rather than a punch for his ability to break walls.
Concept art from Sonic Origins revealed Knuckles was designed as a "Needle Mole", a much similiar style to Sonic's design with a pair of sunglasses or goggles resting ontop of his head and shovel strapped across his back. The shovel could be used as a weapon. He could be weakened by the day's light needing his sunglasses to protect him and giving a stealth ability.
Knuckles was created to be a rival for Sonic. Knuckles was a supporting character at first, an intimidator to Sonic with his rough design and powerful abilities.

Knuckles has given himself the heavy responsibility of guarding the Master Emerald and Angel Island which is all that is left of his ancestors, he has grown a bond with the floating island and it's gem. This of course has led him to become quite isolated from everyone else though he seems to have gotten used that. He has befriended the inhabiting animals and protects the plants of Angel Island.
Knuckles was born alone on Angel Island, brought into this world to defend the Master Emerald. That is Knuckles' destiny and fate. Knuckles is quick to anger, but cool and determined in battle. Even though he considers Sonic his friend, the disposition of the Master Emerald is his ultimate concern. His determination to protect the gem from harm or ill use is set in stone and is unshakeable. He is often envious of the adventurous lifestyle Sonic lives and the fame that has followed from Sonic's deeds, but Knuckles is well known in his own right, as a treasure hunter versed in the martial arts.
Knuckles is the most powerful member on Team Sonic. Knuckles is the last surviving member of the Echidna people who once inhabited Angel Island. Knuckles is able to use the Chaos Emeralds to go Super, changing into Super Knuckles. He is able to use the Super Emeralds to change into Hyper Knuckles. Knuckles is often quite gullible. Knuckles is also headstrong and has a stubborn attitude. Knuckles does try to have fun but can't very often because of his duties. He likes treasure hunting and is the best there is at it. In a way he has to be good just in case he needs to find the Master Emerald pieces, but he still uses the skills to hunt for other treasures at times.

During his usual duty of patroling Knuckles was knocked out by the flash of Chaos Emeralds at the Alter of Emerald. The expolosion destoried the alter and scattered the Chaos Emeralds. Eggman's Death Egg had crashed into Lava Reef sending Angel Island to land onto the sea allowing it to float freely with the help of the Master Emerald's power.
The echidna awoke later to investigate the island and discovered the island now floated on top of the sea. Knuckles had ran into Eggman during his continued investigation, who told him that Sonic and Tails wanted to steal the Chaos Emerald along with the Master Emerald. Knuckles took the scientist's word seriously recalling a prophecy of a dragon's egg bringing disaster to Angel Island, which was a mural at the Hidden Palace.
Knuckles attacked the hedgehog and kitsune getting the better of them for the Chaos Emeralds with plenty of traps throughout many zones. Once Sonic arrived at Hidden Palace, Knuckles emerged from a tunnel he dug from Lava Reef to block the duo. Sonic and Knuckles had a standoff intill Eggman steals the Master Emerald during their battle.
Realizing he had been tricked by Eggman, Knuckles went after the scientist himself attacking the Egg Mobile only to be shocked by Eggman leaving him to escape. The ground beneath Knuckles collasped making the group fall into a pit. After recovering from the fall Knuckles leds the trio to Sky Sanctuary by breaking down a barricade to a Wrap Point, which was a giant ring acting as a teleport. Mecha Sonic Mark II piloting the Egg Mobile had been waiting for Sonic to start off their final battle together. Sonic ultimately defeated Mecha Sonic Mark II
A few days later one of Eggman creations would make one of their own. Mecha Sonic Mark II ordered one of the Eggrobos to attack Knuckles for his plot to destory Angel Island. Eggrobo survived the Death Egg crash from the pervious battle with Sonic. Eggrobo first encountered Knuckles on Mushroom Hill while he was relaxing before a bomb dropped out of no where countinuing his failed attacks to Sky Sanctuary. The Eggrobo's destruction had been exacuted by Mecha Sonic Mark II himself while Knuckles escapes the Egg Mobile's grasp beginning his fight with the cyborg hedgehog. After Mecha Sonic Mark II was defeated he rushed toward the Master Emerald to evolve into Super Mecha Sonic Mark II but was finally foiled by Knuckles for good.
Sky Sanctuary began to crumble, Sonic and Tails arrived with Tails' Tornado after the battle to rescue Knuckles and the Master Emerald. Now the trio are friends, however Sonic and Knuckles still have their spats due to their everlasting rivalry. Knuckles will never trust anyone with guarding the Master Emerald, even for a short time.
If he collects all seven Chaos Emeralds he can become Super Knuckles and has all his natural abilities enhanced as well as being invincible to basically everything. Collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds in his super form lets him become Hyper Knuckles. Not only does he shine every color of the Chaos Emeralds but he can destroy nearby enemies by bashing into a wall and is once again invincible to everything.

During the second Chao Grand Prix, Knuckles joins Sonic and the gang to win 3 Chao GP circuits with 6 tracks for the Chaos Emeralds. Driving the Tempest, a Hummer H1 inspired vehicle. Topless with yellow paint, thick rubber tires and a cyan seat. Knuckles has the ability to punch his opponents making them spin out and can jump obstacles and gaps when no opponents are around. He is the only character to have two abilities. His racing stats are fairly balanced with a medium level across the board.
Once Knuckles has collected all 6 Chaos Emeralds he'll face off against Eggman in the Final GP at the Death Egg track. There is one track located on Angel Island in the Ice Cap Zone. It is the third track in the White Chaos GP. Ice Cap features a simple loop track with snowdrifts and dash power-ups. There are no obstacles to dodge. Due to the limited memory of Game Gear, Knuckles' name is spelt "Knucles".
